The Unusual Black Eye Galaxy
The collision of two galaxies created a merged star system with an unusual appearance and bizarre internal motions. Known as Messier 64, the galaxy has a dark band of light-absorbing dust in front of its bright nucleus. Located in the northern constellation Coma Berenices, the "Black Eye" galaxy resides roughly 17 million light-years from Earth. --- Image by © NASA-Hubble Heritage Team - digi/Science Faction/Corbis
