Sharp Metal Shards on the Berlin Wall
January 1972, Berlin, Germany --- Sharp metal pieces attempt to discourage Germans from climbing the outer wall of the Berlin Wall, which was suddenly erected by the East German government through the center of the city on the night of August 12-13, 1961 in order to stop the flow of their citizens into the West. The wall came to be a symbol of the Cold War and the Communist rule of Eastern Germany. --- Image by © Stephanie Maze/CORBIS
