Smoke Plume of Atlantis on STS-98
The Space Shuttle Atlantis lifts off on STS-98 at 6:13 PM at Kennedy Space Center. The cone of shadow the points toward the full moon near the horizon is actually the shadow of the column of smoke, still glowing near the top as the shuttle lifts higher. The shadow effect is known as Burgeron Effect and is common during sunrise and sunset launches. Digitally restored.
